BURN Young Adult Ministry

Our Hearts Burn for Christ as We Experience Him Anew

Burn is the college and young adult ministry at KFUMC and is for all 18-29 year-olds looking for a place to connect and grow with others in their current stage of life. Burn is designed for those who want to develop stronger relationships, where faith is deepened and purpose is discovered.

Luke 24:32 says, “They said to each other, ‘Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?’” Our goal through Burn is for our hearts to burn for Christ as we experience Him anew.

Your participation in Burn will help you strengthen your faith through Bible studies, small groups, worship, and mission work, all while connecting you to the church family at KFUMC. Whether it’s your first time at church or your hundredth, at Burn we encourage young adults to come just as they are for fun and fellowship with others within the same walks of life.

Rev. Katie Toalson

Associate Pastor

Pastor Katie was raised in Hondo by her parents Alan and Sonya Toalson, and she has a younger brother named Andrew. Katie graduated from Hondo High School and went on to pursue her second-grade dream of attending college at Texas A&M University. As a first-generation college student, she graduated in 2015 from Texas A&M with a Bachelor of Science in Bio-environmental Sciences.

Katie is a lifelong Methodist and has grown up at New Fountain UMC in Hondo. She first heard the call to ordained ministry right before she graduated from high school while sitting in the sanctuary at New Fountain. She briefly entertained the idea of entering into ministry but instead focused on her studies at Texas A&M. Katie attended an Emmaus Walk during her sophomore year in college where she began to further discern her call to ministry. After graduating from college and working for three years, Katie answered her call to ordained ministry and started seminary. She graduated from Duke Divinity School with a Master of Divinity and a Concentration in Methodist/Wesleyan Studies in 2021.

While attending Duke Divinity School, she completed two field education experiences. The first field education experience was a student-initiated placement at Medina Valley UMC in Castroville during the summer of 2019. Katie’s second field education experience was Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Duke University Hospital where she served as an intern during spring of 2020. After graduating from Duke Divinity School, Katie entered into a CPE Residency program with the Baptist Health System in San Antonio where she completed three units of CPE.

Katie loves doing anything creative, trying out new recipes, working on the ranch, spending time with family and friends, and learning new things to grow as a person and a pastor. She enjoys the company of her two dogs, a Great Pyrenees named Emmett Oakley and a Miniature Dachshund named Floyd Buckley. Katie has previously served as Pastor at Devine First UMC and is excited to begin her appointment as an Associate Pastor at Kerrville First UMC. She is looking forward to making meaningful relationships and journeying with the congregation in ministry.
